Municipal elections in Maharashtra see moderate to brisk polling

| | Feb 21, 2017, at 07:42 pm
Mumbai, Feb 21 (IBNS): Until Tuesday afternoon, moderate to brisk polling were reported from Maharashtra for the elections being held for 10 Municipal Corporations, second phase of Zila Parishads and Panchayat Samitis.

In Mumbai, members of the film industry were also seen queuing up to vote.

The main contest for the richest civic body of India - Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) - is being fought between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena as the former allies decided to fight against each other after falling out on seat sharing issue.

The Sena-BJP coalition had been ruling the BMC for a long time but the two parties fell out with each other with the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray openly criticising Narendra Modi and even siding with his arch rivals over the demonetisation issue.

The total number of voters in the 10 municipalities are 3.77 crore. A total of 17,331 candidates are in the fray for 5,512 seats.
