N-E Delhi violence: Death toll climbs to 35
New Delhi/IBNS: The death toll in northeast Delhi violence rose to 35 as more people succumbed to their injuries on Thursday.
The toll was 27 till Wednesday night.
According to reports, 30 deaths have been reported at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) hospital, two at LNJP hospital and one at Saleempur's Jag Parvesh Chandra (JPC) hospital.
Medical officials at GTB hospital said that half of the people died in the hospital received gunshot wounds during the violence.
More than 200 people were injured in the clash which broke out between the supporters and protestors of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
Groups of pro and anti-CAA protesters torched houses, shops and vehicles and hurled stones in the Chand Bagh and Bhajanpura.
The police used teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Centre, Delhi government and police over the Delhi violence.
Slamming the central and Delhi governments, Justice Muralidhar on Wednesday said the court cannot let another 1984 riot, which took place after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to happen.
The High Court judge also asked the central and Delhi government to work together to combat the violence which went on for 48 hours between Monday morning and Tuesday late night in northeast Delhi.
