Nathuram Godse was a patriot: BJP MLA stirs controversy cauldron

Indore, MP, May 29 (IBNS/UNI): Starting a fresh controversy for the Bharatiya Janata Party, its Madhya Pradesh unit vice president and Dr Ambedkar Nagar-Mhow legislator Usha Thakur on Wednesday described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Vinayak Godse as a patriot.

“Godse was a patriot and concerned regarding the country; we ought not to comment on the time and circumstances that made him decide to assassinate the Father of the Nation,” she told a news channel during a private function in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital.

Earlier, Bhopal parliamentarian Pragya Singh Thakur – while she was on the campaign trail as the BJP candidate – had said Godse was a patriot. She was later forced to apologise after her party distanced itself from the comment.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said he would not be able to forgive Sadhvi Pragya for insulting the 'Father of the Nation'.

"I will never forgive Sadhvi Pragya for insulting Bapu," Modi had told news channel News 24.

The BJP had showcaused Thakur and two other party leaders for speaking out of turn on the same issue.

A statement by actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan had started the Godse controversy. At a rally, he had said: "Godse, the first extremist of independent India, was a Hindu."

Nathuram Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha.
