Admiral Lanba, the 23rd chief of the Naval Staff, will retire on May 31. Admiral Lanba is also chairman of the Chief of the Staff Committee. During his service of over 31 years in the Navy, he has been decorated with PVSM, AVSM and ADC.

Admiral Karambir Singh has been appointed as his successor. He will assume office on May 31.

His appointment was challenged by Naval Commander Vice Admiral Bimal Verma in the Armed Forces Tribunal for overlooking his seniority by the government. It was turned down.
