NDA picks Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker again, nomination filing shortly

| @indiablooms | Jun 25, 2024, at 05:09 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: In a continuity, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Tuesday picked Om Birla as its bid for the Lok Sabha Speaker's post.

The speculation over BJP MP Om Birla continuing as the Speaker started in the morning after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament.

Birla, who is elected from Kota-Bundi constituency of Rajasthan, served as the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024.

Reportedly, Defence Minister and BJP veteran Rajnath Singh reached out to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to build a consensus on appointing the Speaker.

INDIA, the opposition alliance, is yet to make a comment on the Speaker election.

It is to be seen whether the Opposition gets the Deputy Speaker's post in the 18th Lok Sabha, which has a strong Opposition on paper for the first time in 10 years.

All eyes were on the ruling camp as the BJP-led NDA is facing heat from the Opposition after the saffron party's tally fell from 303 to 240 needing allies to run the government.

Moreover, the alleged examination scandal related to NET and NEET has brought the Modi government under the scanner.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers took oath as the MPs of Lok Sabha.
