NEET-UG 2024: Supreme Court issues notice to Centre, NTA on pleas seeking CBI probe into paper leak
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) on a batch of pleas seeking a probe into the alleged paper leak by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), media reports said.
The top court also issued a notice hearing a plea filed by NTA seeking transfer of various cases pending in high courts on NEET-UG 2024 to the apex court.
A vacation bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta took note of various cases related to the pleas seeking a cancellation of the NEET 2024 are pending in various high courts.
The next Supreme Court hearing will be held on July 8.
The Centre on Thursday (June 13) told the Supreme Court that the grace marks given to 1,563 students will be cancelled and they will be informed about their actual marks.
The government told the court that the students will be given an option to appear for a retest on June 23.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the NTA but had refused to stay the ongoing counselling process for admission of selected candidates.
Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah told the NTA counsel as quoted by The Indian Express, "It’s not so simple that because you have done it (conducted the exam), it’s sacrosanct. We need answers for that…The sanctity has been affected. So we need answers."
Justice Vikram Nath said, " Let the counselling start. We are not stopping the counselling."
In their plea, the students said as quoted by The Indian Express, "After having stumbled upon news of the NEET exam paper leak they have been shaken at the core.
"Since the breaking of news on the NEET exam paper leak, the Petitioners are under tremendous stress and anxiety … their family members nurtured the dream of Petitioners becoming a medical practitioner one day."
Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan, who denied the Opposition's charges of corruption in NEET, posted on X, "Central govt. is committed to protect the interests of NEET examinees. I want to assure the students that all their concerns will be addressed with fairness and equity. No student will be at a disadvantage and no child’s career will be at jeopardy.
"Facts related to NEET examination are in cognisance of Hon’ble Supreme Court. Central govt. will take all necessary actions for the well-being of students as per the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. Counselling process of NEET will be underway soon and it is of utmost importance to move ahead in this direction without any confusion."
