Nepal rocked by fresh 6.7 magnitude quake, death toll crosses 2100

Kathmandu/ New Delhi, Apr 26 (IBNS) The death toll following Saturday's devastating earthquake in Nepal crossed 2100 with the Himalayan country experiencing fresh quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale on Sunday, triggering more panic across the nation.

According to the  United States Geological Survey, the aftershocks measured 6.7 in the Richter scale.

"Another Earth quake occurred today of 6.8 magnitude around 12.39 pm IST (Indian Standard Time) at a depth of 10 Km with its Epicentral Region located in Nepal about 65 Km east of Kathmandu. Its Latitude and Longitude are 27.71 N and 85.91 E respectively," the Indian government said in a statement.

The epicenter of Sunday's quake was Kodari, around 80 km east of Kathmandu.

Aftershocks were also felt in UP, Bihar, Punjab, Assam and West Bengal.

Apart from Delhi, tremors were also felt in Lucknow and Kolkata.

In Bihar, the tremors went on for several minutes, reports said.

Metro services were also disrupted in Kolkata and Delhi following the tremors.

Within ten minutes of occurrence of the quake the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Center (ITEWC) of INCOIS- Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services gave details of the epicenter and the magnitude of the quake, read the government statement.

"Meanwhile the Weather Forecasting Center of the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted fairly widespread rain/ thundershower activity over Nepal during next 24 hours. The activity is most likely to become widespread on 27 and 28 April with possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorm activity, particularly over eastern part of Nepal. Similar weather is also predicted for Kathmandu. It has been suggested that precaution be taken against the above weather and also due to possibility of landslides at vulnerable sites," read the statement.

"Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim would also experience fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower activity during next 3 days with possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorm. Scattered thunderstorm activity over Bihar and isolated over East Uttar Pradesh would also occur during next 2-3 days," it said.

Meanwhile, more Indians have been evacuated from Nepal.

" An IAF aircraft C17 with 225 persons enroute to Delhi. Estimated Time of Arrival is 1700 hours in Delhi," MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

"More Indians return home. A C-17 with 52 passengers and IL-76 with 200 passengers enroute to Delhi," Swarup said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday reviewed the ongoing rescue & relief operations in earthquake affected areas of India, here .

The meeting was attended by the Union Home Secretary L.C. Goyal, the Secretary, Border Management, Sneh Lata Kumar, the Secretary NDMA, R.K. Jain, the Director General, Shastra Seema Bal (SSB), B.D. Sharma and other senior officials of Ministry of Home Affairs.

Singh spoke to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav and the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar and asked them to mobilise a fleet of buses and ambulances to rescue people stranded in Nepal due to yesterday’s earthquake.

The Union Home Minister also instructed the SSB to set up camps along the border to provide medical help to tourists crossing India Nepal border.

As of now, ten teams of National Disaster Response Force are pressed into action and six more teams will be dispatched to earthquake affected areas in Nepal.

Singh has instructed the Bureau of Immigration to give ‘gratis visas’ to all tourists stranded in Nepal who are coming to India.

The Government of India has announced compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each, to families of those who lost their lives in yesterday's earthquake across parts of India.

More then 40 people have been killed in India by Saturday's earthquake.
