NHRC orders probe by fact-finding team on post-poll violence in West Bengal
New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: Taking suo-motu cognisance of reported post-poll violence in West Bengal, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday ordered to constitute and send a fact-finding team to the state for on the spot investigation into the matter.
“Considering as a fit case of alleged violation of Right to Life of the innocent citizens, the Commission has taken suo-motu cognisance of the matter and requested its DIG (Investigation) to constitute a team of the officers of the Investigation Division of the Commission to conduct an on the spot fact finding investigation and to submit a report at the earliest, preferably within two weeks”, the NHRC said in its order.
In its order the Commission also said, the political workers allegedly clashed with each other, party offices were torched down and some homes were ransacked and valuables also looted.
“District Administration, local law and order enforcement agencies appear not to have acted to stop such violation of human rights of the affected persons,” it added.
In its opening remarks, the national human right body said, it has come across several media reports published in various leading newspapers on May 4, 2021, regarding the death of some persons in the alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal on May 3, 2021.

Even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed for calm, West Bengal is roiled by large-scale post poll violence claiming at least a dozen lives so far while the opposition parties' leaders and workers are being attacked and their property looted, according to media reports and the opposition parties.
Opposition alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) is holding 'small' victory rallies across the state flouting Election Commission's order. The Opposition shared videos and images of widespread political clashes.
West Bengal's opposition parties said they have been witnessing an action replay of 2011 in just two days since the result of the assembly election was declared.
From the Left, Congress, and Indian Secular Front (ISF)'s Sanjukta Morcha to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)— all the opposition parties are alleging violent attacks on their workers and properties by the alleged activists of the TMC which has made its hat-trick of wins in the state.
At least 12 deaths have been reported in political violence so far since Sunday.
