Chhatradhar Mahato arrest

NIA arrests TMC leader Chhatradhar Mahato over CPI-M leader murder and 2009 Rajdhani Express hostage case

Kolkata/IBNS: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the wee hours of Sunday arrested pro-Maoist and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Chhatradhar Mahato in connection with its ongoing investigations into CPI-M leader Prabir Mahato murder and 2009 Rajdhani Express hostage cases, officials said.

According to sources in the NIA, a large team of the national counter terrorism task force picked up Mahato from his residence in Jhargram's Lalgarh at around 3:30 am, hours after the polling concluded in the area.

Chhatradhar Mahato, who had served jail time for assassination bid on former Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, recently joined the TMC and he was appointed as a state committee member of the party.

The NIA had quizzed Mahato multiple times earlier and after Mar 15's interrogation, he reportedly skipped three summons of the central agency, citing poor health condition though he attended TMC poll-campaigns during the period.

Mahato, who has been arrested under the UA(P)A sections, will be produced before an NIA special court shortly.
