Nirbhaya Case: High Court to hold a special hearing on Centre's petition to decide the hanging of two convicts

New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi High Court will hold a special hearing on Sunday at 3 pm in the afternoon to hear the Centre's petition that sought the execution of at least two convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case, media reports said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the government told the high court that the convicts of a heinous rape and murder case were trying the patience of the country by their delaying tactics and this case will go down in the history for the same reason.

On Friday last, the government had petitioned against the freezing of the black warrant by the Delhi court issued against the convicts of the rape and murder of the 23-year-old paramedical student on the night of December 16, 2012.

Tushar Mehta, who is the government's second-highest law officer said Mukesh Singh and Vinay Sharma - should be executed since they had exhausted their legal options.
The Centre wants the high court to direct the trial court to issue fresh black warrants in this regard.

The four convicts — Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Kumar Gupta (25), Akshay Thakur (31) and Vinay Sharma (26) - were handed death sentence by a fast-track court within a year of the 2012 rape and murder of the woman. But their execution has been pending owing to the delay in completion of the appeals process in the higher courts.

However, the Tihar Prison manual requires the convicts, sentenced to death by a single verdict, to be hanged together and rules out hanging of such convicts one by one.
