Nitish Kumar to return as Bihar CM; NDA swearing-in set for November 19-20: Reports

Nitish Kumar is set to remain the Chief Minister of Bihar, with the formation of the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government expected within the next three days, NDTV reported, quoting sources.

The decision follows the finalisation of the cabinet formula at a meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and alliance leaders.

The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on November 19 or 20, depending on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schedule, at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, with several Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and senior NDA leaders expected to attend, according to NDTV.

The event is expected to be a significant display of political strength ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections.

The NDA secured a massive mandate in the Bihar elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the single-largest party with 89 seats, followed closely by the JDU with 85 seats.

Smaller allies such as the LJP(RV), HAM, and RLM also performed well.

The government formation process is already underway, with the 18th Bihar Assembly notification issued and the Model Code of Conduct officially ending.

Nitish Kumar is expected to convene a cabinet meeting to approve the dissolution of the outgoing 17th Assembly before submitting his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, paving the way for the new government.

The cabinet formula gives the lion’s share to the BJP, followed by the JDU, with smaller allies accommodated as well.

According to NDTV's sources, the BJP is likely to get 15–16 ministerial berths, the JDU 14, LJP(RV) three, and one berth each for HAM and RLSP.

The NDA followed a “one minister for every six MLAs” formula to determine allocations.
