Nitish meets officials to discuss AES and heat wave in Bihar

Patna, Jun 17 (UNI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today directed the authorities concerned to take all possible steps for prevention and cure of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) to save children from falling sick and minimising casualties from the disease besides taking measures to save the people from continued heat spell in the state.

Mr Kumar, during a review meeting with officials on measures being taken to check AES and handle the situation arising out from continued spell of a heat wave in the state, said that all possible steps required to face the challenge, must be taken and no leniency at any level in this regard would be tolerated.

Regular power supply should be ensured as it was essential to face the challenge of extreme heat conditions in the state, he added.

"A report on the condition of families should be prepared of which children died from AES symptoms which would help in preparing an action plan to check such incidents in future," the CM said adding that economic condition, hygienic condition and other important factors should be taken into account during the preparation of the report. If adequate arrangements were made for safe drinking water and open defecation, it would help in checking 90 per cent of the disease affecting the people, he noted.

Kumar said that a meeting of experts was held in the year 2015 but they could not reach on any conclusion regarding causes of AES in Muzaffarpur and other districts of Bihar. The state government was sensitive to the issue and all steps were being taken with sincerity for prevention and cure of AES in Muzaffarpur and other districts, he added.
