Noida official removed following engineer's death in water-filled construction pit; SIT probe ordered

The Noida Authority CEO, M Lokesh, has been removed from his post following the death of a 27-year-old software engineer whose car plunged into a water-filled pit at an under-construction site in Sector 150, triggering widespread outrage and protests, media reports said.

The victim, Yuvraj Mehta, who worked with a Gurugram-based company, was returning home late Friday when his car fell into the ditch amid dense fog.

According to police, Mehta suffocated to death after being trapped underwater and also suffered a cardiac arrest.

Mehta’s father, Raj Kumar Mehta, alleged gross negligence by local authorities and demanded strict accountability to ensure that “no other parent has to lose their son in such circumstances.”

The family’s complaint led to the registration of a case against two builders—MJ Wishtown Planner Limited and Lotus Green Construction Private Limited.

Earlier on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the incident.

According to an official statement, the SIT has been directed to conduct a detailed investigation and submit its report to the chief minister within five days.

A delivery agent who witnessed the incident claimed that rescue operations were delayed, suggesting that Mehta might have survived if timely action had been taken.

Residents of the area staged protests, alleging inadequate barricading and the absence of reflectors or warning signs at the accident-prone construction site.

While police have denied any negligence in the rescue operation, the Noida Authority installed barricades at the spot following the protests. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over safety measures at construction sites and accountability of civic authorities in the region.
