Opposition delegation visits Ghazipur, not allowed to meet protesting farmers: Harsimrat Kaur Badal
New Delhi/UNI: As many as15 MPs from ten opposition parties on Thursday visited the farmers’ protest site at Ghazipur border but were not allowed by the police to meet the protestors, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal said.
“We (opposition) all have come here to discuss with farmers their plights but not allowed to enter the site which is fortified with several layers of security,” Badal told mediapersons.
She said the leaders from the opposition wanted to meet the farmers and listen to their plights.
“We wanted a discussion on the farmer's issue on the floor of the House but not permitted. That is why we have come here to give the actual picture to the government,” the former cabinet minister said.
She claimed that the protestors have been sequestered at the site where there is lack of drinking water, food and toilets.
"We are shocked. They (farmers) are being treated as anti-nationals. The site is even more fortified than the Pakistan border,” the SAD leader alleged.
Kanimozi of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) said even in case of medical emergency, neither doctors can reach farmers nor vice versa due to several layers of barricading.
"Is this the way to keep our own people? Isn't it a gross human rights violation,” she questioned.
Nationalist Congress Party (DMK) leader Supriya Sule alleged that the central government is ‘mistreating’ the farmers and the opposition will fight for justice.
The opposition’s delegation included leaders from Trinamool Congress, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Indian Union Muslim League, National Conference.
Tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting at Delhi’s borders against the newly enacted farm laws.
Since Republic Day violence, the security at the protest sites has been heightened with several layers of barricading, large presence of police personnel and suspension of internet services.
The Opposition has been demanding discussion on the farm bills in Parliament and independent probe into the violence.
