OROP: Rahul Gandhi released after being detained for third time in two days

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IBNS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday released hours after being detained for the third time in two days from the national capital's Jantar Mantar for holding a protest over the suicide of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal.

Rahul was detained in a police vehicle at 5 Firozeshah Road.

He was released after two hours of detention.

After being released, Rahul told reporters that : "The way police treated the family of the veteran armyman was very wrong. This impacts the morale of the soldiers at the borders. The police should apologise to the family."

According to reports, the police said that the detention was done "for his safety" as the crowds became unmanageable after he arrived.

Earlier in the day, Rahul attended the ex-serviceman's funeral in Haryana.

Ram Kishen Grewal committed suicide over the 'one rank one pension' (OROP) issue.

The veteran was protesting over the OROP issue at Jantar Mantar in Delhi when he committed suicide on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition parties are engaged in a verbal duel over the issue.

Aam Admi Party has said they will hold a condolence meeting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The BJP has said that the veteran's death should not be made into a political issue.

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that Congress paid no heed to the OROP issue for 43 years, media reported.

In a televised interview on NDTV, Rao said that Rahul Gandhi is doing all this to get political mileage.

In another televised interview on NDTV, Manish Tiwari of the Congress said that the government behaved in a high-handed fashion.

The Union Defence Ministry has said that whether the former serviceman was tacitly encouraged to commit suicide must be investigated, reported NDTV.
