New Delhi, Aug 29 (IBNS): Former Union Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday congratulated MK Stalin after he was named as the president of the southern political party  Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

In his tweet, Chidambaram mentioned Stalin's call for teaching Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP a 'lesson' and said the comment put the southern party on the frontline of those who are fighting for the idea of a liberal, democratic and inclusive India .

Chidambaram tweeted:"Congratulations to M K Stalin on his first speech after being elected President of DMK. His forthright call to teach the BJP a lesson places the DMK on the frontline of those who are fighting for the idea of a liberal, democratic and inclusive India."

After taking over as the new president of the DMK, MK Stalin on Tuesday said his party will 'teach a lesson' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre.

"We will teach a lesson to the Narendra Modi government," Stalin was quoted as saying by NDTV to his party workers after he took over as the new president of the DMK.

He also urged his party men to throw out the ruling AIADMK government from the state.

Stalin (65), the son of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late Muthuvel Karunanidhi, succeeded his father.

The DMK president's post had fallen vacant after party patriarch Karunanidhi's demise on Aug 7, 2018.

Stalin became the working president of the party in 2017.

Following Karunanidhi's death, a succession war within the party took place with Alagiri, the other son of the late DMK president, claiming several party loyalists are with him.

Alagiri was expelled from the DMK in 2014 for "anti-party activities".
