Srinagar/UNI: Pakistani troops on Friday violated ceasefire when it resorted to unprovoked heavy shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.

Official sources said that Pakistani troops, violating the 2003 ceasefire, fired mortar shells on Friday afternoon, targeting forward posts and civilian areas.

The Indian troops also retaliated and the exchange of fire was going on when the reports last came in. However, they said there was no report of any causality or damage to property from this side of LoC.

Meanwhile, panic has gripped the villages near the border area, where many locals have abandoned their houses and moved to safety to evade shelling from across the border.
