PAN excluded, mother tongue added in proposed NPR

New Delhi/UNI: The Registrar General of India (RGI) has excluded the Permanent Account Number (PAN) in the proposed data collection for National Population Register (NPR), slated to begin from April, following apprehensions raised in some quarters during the pre-test of NPR, which was concluded recently, a Home Ministry source said here on Wednesday.

Taking cognisance of the people's apprehensions, the RGI has dropped the requirement of PAN in the coming updation of the NPR and a new clause relating to the mother tongue has been added, the source added.

During the recently-concluded pre-test or trial of the updation of the proposed NPR exercise, five documents’ numbers such as mobile number, driving license, voter identity card, Aadhar number and PAN were sought.

As per the Centre’s notification, the NPR updating process will be done between April 1 and September 30 by all states and this collection of data will have to be completed in 45 days during these six months.

The states have been given liberty to fix a time period of 45 days as per their convenience, the source further said.

The pre-test for updating NPR data was carried out in 73 districts across the country and more than 30 lakh respondents had furnished their data which were carried out on a mobile app developed by the RGI.

The Home Ministry source also confirmed that all states have re-notified the updating NPR process except West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, the union territories of Puducherry and Ladakh which are likely to notify it soon.

There would be no bio-metric and no document is required for NPR, the Government officials reiterated again.

The last NPR update done in the country was in 2015.

The officials also said that the data of the last NPR were used by the Government in various welfare measures like 'Ayushman Bharat' and making of ration cards in many states.
