Parliament: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi holds Opposition's strategy meet, TMC joins

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who was seen steering the Opposition unity in Parliament last week, Tuesday held a breakfast meeting with 14 anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parties in a bid to strategise how they would work in the monsoon session.

The meeting is being held in the Constitution Club, which is beside Parliament.

Though West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) skipped the Gandhi-led joint Opposition protest last week, the party Tuesday joined the meeting.

TMC MPs Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra were seen participating in the meeting.

Interestingly, no representative of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was present in the meeting.

Not just the pot-boiling snooping issue, Gandhi said in the meeting to raise the issue of fuel price hike. In a symbolic protest against the fuel price hike, the former Congress chief held a cycle rally along with other MPs from the Constitution Club to Parliament.

Also he urged various disperate political parties, which are coming from diverse states, to set aside basic differences and raise the issues together.

Tweeting a picture from the meeting, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "After a sumptuous breakfast, leaders of eleven Opposition parties spoke briefly about the importance of unity in Parliament and on the ground in the struggle against the anti-people policies & undemocratic actions of the BJP government. We are witnessing something special here."

The monsoon session of Parliament has remained dysfunctional mostly as various opposition parties, led by the Congress, have been demanding an immediate discussion on the Pegasus spyware issue.

The government, which is yet to agree with the Opposition's demand, has already given a statement through IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
