Patna: Sharad Yadav calls for grand alliance at national level, Mamata Banerjee slams Centre

Patna, Aug 27 (IBNS): Rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Sunday said a grand alliance will be formed at the national level to take on the BJP at the next Lok Sabha elections.

Sharad Yadav used the platform of RJD chief Lalu Prasad's grand anti-BJP rally in Patna to make the announcement.

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and BSP leader Mayawati, however, did not attend the rally.

Sharad Yadav and Lalu joined the stage at  Gandhi Maidan here with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Paty's Akhilesh Yadav.

Speaking at the rally, Sharad Yadav was quoted as saying: "A grand alliance will be formed in the entire nation."

Bihar witnessed a major political jolt in recent time when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar left the Grand Alliance, which included the RJD and the Congress, last month to join hands with the BJP.

Attacking the Centre, Mamata Banerjee said: "Three years have passed. Where is ‘achhe din’? Unemployment has risen, women are not safe, and farmers are dying. Minorities, Dalits and weaker sections are under threat."

She said: "In the upcoming elections, Bihar’s populace will leave Nitish-BJP. Bihar is being intimidated. Tamil Nadu is being intimidated. Bengal is being intimidated. India is under threat."

Despite absence of Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi, the rally was attended by Congress party's Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and party general secretary C P Joshi.
