PM Modi pays homage to the heroes of 1857 mutiny

New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to all those who were a part of the events of 1857 mutiny for their outstanding courage.

"On this day in 1857 began the historic First War of Independence, which ignited a spirit of patriotism among our fellow citizens and contributed to the weakening of colonial rule. I pay homage to all those who were a part of the events of 1857 for their outstanding courage," he said in a tweet.

The Indian Mutiny of 1857-59 was a widespread but unsuccessful rebellion against the rule of British East India Company in India which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British crown.

It began as a revolt of the sepoys of the British East India Company's army but eventually secured the participation of the masses.

The revolt is known by several names like the Indian Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857, the Indian Insurrection and the First War of Independence etc.
