PM Modi speaks on Sadhvi speech, urges adamant Opposition to let House function

New Delhi, Dec 4 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a statement in Parliament on the abusive remarks of Union Minister of State for Food Processing Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti arguing that since she had already sought apology for her speech during a campaign in Delhi, the house should be allowed to function but the Opposition hardened their stance holding that nothing less than the resignation of the minister would quell them.
Modi urged the opposition to let the house get to work, saying that he had disapproved the language of Sadhvi strongly..

“I have strongly criticized the sort of language she [Niranjan Jyoti] exercised in an election speech in Delhi. She has apologized already and hence it should be accepted with grace in national interest,” the PM told the Rajya Sabha.

"There are many seniors and experienced people in this House. I know how they feel and I would urge all to accept her apology as it is also a message to all of us. Now that she has apologized I pray you all to let the house function for the good of the nation," said Modi.

However, the Opposition seemed unrelenting and they said they would accept nothing short of the resignation of the minister.

Congress leader in the House Anand Sharma said: "This is not the first time such language has been used. This should not be forgiven."

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien said till the minister resigned his party will not let the Rajya Sabha  function,

The Upper House of Parliament could not function since Monday as the opposition demanded the minister be removed immediately on the grounds of her abusive remarks.

Jyoti on Monday said: “You have to decide. Do you want a government of Ramzaadon (followers of Ram) or Haramzadoon (those who are illegitimate)?”

She also criticized Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son-in-law Robert Vadra’s controversial land deals. “The son of an ordinary family, who sold utensils, Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law, how did this man become a millionaire? They robbed the poor,” she said.

Jyoti debuted in the general elections held in May this year and won from Uttar Pradesh. She was one of the six BJP MPs in-charge the party’s campaign for the Delhi polls scheduled early next year.

Following Jyoti’s abusive remarks, PM Modi on Tuesday also warned his lawmaker not to speak “out of turn”.
