PM Modi to visit Amphan-affected Bengal today, to conduct chopper survey with Mamata
Kolkata/IBNS: Responding to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's appeal to visit West Bengal which has been battered by Cyclone Amphan on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the state on Friday to take stock of the present situation.
Modi is scheduled to land at Kolkata Airport at 10 am.
He is scheduled to visit Basirhat and undertake a joint chopper survey of the cyclone-hit areas with Banerjee.
Addressing a press conference, Banerjee on Thursday said, "I would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come and visit affected areas.”
Earlier, the PM had tweeted and assured to leave no stone unturned to assist Bengal and Odisha.
Cyclone Amphan on Wednesday pummelled the eastern state of West Bengal leaving scores of people dead, countless homeless, besides plunging large parts of the state without electricity, internet connections and other communications as the six-hour-long calamitous dance of the nature left even the city airport in disarray.
The devastating cyclone claimed 72 lives in West Bengal, including 15 in the capital city of Kolkata.
Several roads across the state are blocked by the uprooted trees, lampposts.
The telecom service, internet connection, water and electricity supply are yet get normal in the state.
"Electricity will only get normal if uprooted trees are displaced," said state's Power Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.
Odisha, the other affected state, experienced less devastation compared to West Bengal but reported at least five deaths.
