PMO's inbox crowded with invitations from foreign leaders: MEA
New Delhi, June 6 (IBNS): With just 10 days in office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received a long list of invitations from foreign leaders who have expressed their willingness to meet him.
"The Prime Minister's inbox relating to the foreign policy is very crowded," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a media briefing on Friday.
He said there are several upcoming multilateral visits for the PM including BRICS, UNGA, E Asia, ASEAN, SAARC and G20.
"These five multilateral visits are on agenda where are our leaders generally participate," Akbaruddin said.
Modi is scheduled to visit the BRICS summit in the month of July, the United National General Assembly (UNGA) meet in September, Oceana cross-country meet in October and G-20 summit in November.
The MEA spokesperson also added that Modi might visit the SAARC summit that is due to be held in November in Kathmandu.
Akbaruddin informed that Modi's first foreign visit will be to Bhutan.
"The Honourable Prime Minister will be on his first foreign visit to Bhutan. The Prime Minister look forward to his first visit to Bhutan. The visit will happen later this month. All the dates that have been speculated collectively by all of you in this room are not correct, we are still exploring the dates," he told mediapersons.
Speaking about Modi's visit to the United States, he said, "Among the earliest leaders, who have contacted the Prime Minister was President (Barack) Obama. Obama had extended an invitation to Modi. We have received a particular date for the PM's visit. We are trying to chalk out a date which is comfortable for both of us...for the Prime Minister to be in Washington and have a summit level meeting. He is likely to visit there in September."
He also said Modi is likely to visit Japan in July.
"Yes the Prime Minister has received a date for visit to Japan. We are working very closely to fix particular dates. He is likely to visit Japan in July. We will also be interacting with strategic partners at multi-lateral meetings," the MEA spokesperson said.
He also added the neighbourhood relations will remain a priority for the Indian PM, whose swearing-in ceremony was attended by all SAARC leaders.
"Neighbourhood remains India's priority. Both the Prime Minister of India and the External Affairs Minister (Sushma Swaraj) will have their first visits to the neighbourhood," he said.
