Srinagar/UNI: A Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was arrested along with arms and ammunition in south Kashmir district of Kulgam, a police official said here on Friday.

He said following specific information about the movement of militants, a checkpoint was established at Nihama in Kulgam on Thursday.

“A person was intercepted at the checkpoint late on Thursday night,” he said, adding during the checking, police recovered incriminating materials -- including arms and ammunition.

He said the person, identified as Shakir Alie, a resident of DH Pora in Kulgam, was immediately taken into custody. “The accused during interrogation revelled that he is an active militant of HM,” he said.

“A case FIR No 48/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station DH Pora in this regard and further investigation has been initiated,” he said.

He said the arrested militant had gone missing on April 14, 2020. “It was later learned that he had joined HM. He was apprehended earlier in 2018 when he had attempted to join militant ranks but due to the lack of evidence he was released without charges,” the official added.
