Police officers need to be protected by seniors: Kiran Bedi
New Delhi/IBNS: A day after a huge number of cops organised a protest against the assault on police officers, Lieutenant Governor and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Wednesday said men and women in uniforms are needed to be protected by their seniors, media reports said.
"When police men and women perform their duty fairly, firmly, fearlessly and responsibly, they need to be protected by their seniors," Bedi said as quoted by NDTV.
"Never drive men and women in uniform to the wall and let them lose faith in their own service and own seniors," she added.
Thousands of police personnel on Tuesday gathered outside the Police Headquarters to protest against the assault on cops by the lawyers in Tis Hazari court on last Saturday and a similar incident in Saket on Monday this week.
As per the demands of the agitators, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik had to come out in public and give a statement amid the noisy chants from the protesters.
Addressing the police personnel protesting at the Police Head Quarters (PHQ) in ITO, Patnaik said, "In last few days, there have been certain incidents in the capital which we handled very well. The situation is improving after that. It is the testing times for police force. But it is also an hour of expectations. Have complete faith that you will act like a disciplined force and maintain peace. The Centre, people have expectations from us. An inquiry has been set-up on the issue. Let the law take its course."
"We need to fulfill the responsibility of maintaining law and order. It is expected from us, that we are the gatekeepers of law, will continue to assure law and order in the capital. I request you all to resume to your duties," he said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Bar Council of India and other bar associations on a plea by the Central government.
The Centre had earlier asked the Delhi HC that its previous order for no coercive action against advocates in connection with the police-lawyers clash not be applicable on subsequent incidents, Times Now reported.
