Police shoot one of the men accused of raping, poisoning class 10 student in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut

Police said two accused, Lakhan and Vikas, who were arrested early on Saturday, were being taken to the court when they tried to snatch a pistol from the policemen guarding them and attempted to flee, said an NDTV report.

A team comprising cops from Meerut Police's Surveillance Department and the Sardhana Police Station conducted the encounter in which Lakhan was shot in his leg as he opened fire at the police.

Police said a combing operation was launched when Lakhan opened fire in a bid to thwart arrest. However, both of them were recaptured and Lakhan was sent to hospital for treatment.

The young girl was gang raped by four men, two of them are still at large, on Thursday and was forced to consume a poisonous substance which caused her deaths, said the report.

According to an FIR lodged by a relative of the victim, she left home around 3.30 pm and returned home by 5.15 pm, when she told her parents about the assault. She was rushed to a hospital but she died during treatment.

Police has also recovered a suicide note from victim's home, which named a man called Lakhan and others. Lakhan attended a tuition class with the girl.
