Police to investigate conspiracy angle in Mumbai bus accident that killed 7

Mumbai/IBNS: The driver involved in the horrific Mumbai bus accident rammed into 50-60 vehicles and kept going for 300 metres before it finally crashed into the gates of a residential complex, the police Tuesday told the court seeking his custody for interrogation.

The investigating officers are trying to find if accused Sanjay More, 54, had any motive behind driving the vehicle recklessly as he knew it was a crowded area.

The toll in the bus accident in Mumbai's Kurla West rose to seven while 42 others were injured, media reports said.

The accident occurred after a state-run  Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus rammed into some vehicles on a busy road in Mumbai's Kurla (West) on Monday night at 9:45 PM.

CCTV footage shows the red bus coming down the road at a high speed.

The bus first rammed into an autorickshaw.

Bus driver Sanjay More was arrested and charged with culpable homicide.

Mumbai Police's lawyer told the Kurla Court that the police are also investigating whether there was a conspiracy behind the incident and whether the driver had used the bus as a weapon. "We also want to check if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time," the lawyer said.

The lawyer appearing for More, however, said the police didn't need his custody and all the information could be gathered from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), which operates the bus.

The BEST administration, he said, can answer whether More was adequately trained and whether his medical report proved that he was drunk at the time of the accident.

After hearing both sides, the court sent the driver to police custody till December 21.

The BEST buses provide transport service to the entire city and also extend their operations outside city limits into neighbouring urban areas.
