Prez Mukherjee, PM Modi and Bengal CM pay homage to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary

New Delhi/Kolkata, May 9 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday paid homage to polymath Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary.

"My humble tribute to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary #PresidentMukherjee," the President of India tweeted.

In a series of tweets, President Mukherjee urged the people of India to draw inspiration from Tagore's philosophies.

"Gurudev was the perfect ambassador of our country at a time when little was known about India in the outside world #PresidentMukherjee," he said.

"Gurudev Tagore set forth a vision of peace and fraternity that continues to have relevance and global appeal #PresidentMukherjee," an ensuing tweet read.

"In a world fettered by race, creed & colour, Gurudev Tagore promoted internationalism for a new world order #PresidentMukherjee," Mukherjee tweeted.

"Tagore was a great soul who not only illumined the time he lived in but continues to remain an inspiration for humanity #PresidentMukherjee," he said.

"Let us use this occasion to draw inspiration from Tagore’s idea of oneness of humanity #PresidentMukherjee," the President concluded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the poet for his contribution towards India's freedom movement.

"Gurudev Tagore will always be remembered for his powerful thoughts & contribution to the freedom movement. Tributes to him on his Jayanti," the Prime Minister's tweet read.

Paying homage to Tagore on his 156th birth anniversary, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, tweeted, "Homage to Kobiguru #RabindranathTagore on his birth anniversary."

A Nobel Prize winning litterateur, Tagore is the creator of India's national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana'.

He was also the first Asian to win the prestigious award, in 1913.
