Prithviraj Chavan resigns after NCP ends alliance with Congress
Mumbai, Sept 26 (IBNS): Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Friday resigned as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) broke alliance with the Congress and withdrew its support to the state government.
Chavan's government, which had a strength of 82 legislators, has been reduced to a minority just few days ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
According to reports, Chavan tendered his resignation letter to state Governor C Vidyasagar Rao at the Raj Bhavan on Friday evening.
The NCP pulled out its 62 MLAs from the Congress-led government.
The Congress has already announced a list of 118 candidates.
The NCP had earlier claimed that the Congress had ignored them in the alliance.
The party wanted a change for the post of the CM as it had been held by the Congress in the 15-year-old alliance.
Meanwhile, the Congress has reportedly said it will partner with the Samajwadi Party (SP).
This comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena on Thursday decided to contest the Maharashtra Assembly elections alone breaking the grand and 25-year-old 'Mahayuti' alliance.
The Maharashtra elections are scheduled to be held on October 15.
