Pulwama attack: India stops its share of water flow to Pakistan

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IBNS): Amidst anguish over the Pulwama terror attack which claimed the lives of 40 soldiers, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday informed that India will block the flow of its share of waters from eastern rivers to Pakistan.

In a tweet, Gadkari wrote: "Under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Sri @narendramodi ji, Our Govt. has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. We will divert  water from Eastern rivers and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab."

Gadkari in a series of tweets wrote: "The construction of dam has started at Shahpur- Kandi on Ravi river. Moreover, UJH project will store our share of water for use in J&K and the balance water will flow from 2nd Ravi-BEAS Link to provide water to other basin states."

"All the above Projects are declared as the National projects," he added.

Under the Indus Waters Treaty, waters flowing in three of Indus tributaries -- the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi -- have been allotted to India; while the Chenab, Jhelum and Indus waters have been allotted to Pakistan.

The move comes close on the heels of withdrawing MFN status to Pakistan and an imposition of 200 per cent tariff on the goods exported from Pakistan to India.

Stopping of water flow is seen as one more step in India's crackdown against its western neighbour after the dastardly Feb 14 Pulwama attack which left more than 40 Army personnel dead.

The decision comes amid deteriorating relationship between India and Pakistan over the Pulwama attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack, which has been claimed by Pakistan-based militant organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
