Pulwama mastermind Hamza Burhan shot dead in PoK by unknown gunmen: Reports

New Delhi/IBNS: Hamza Burhan, one of the alleged masterminds behind the 2019 Pulwama attack, has reportedly been killed by unidentified assailants in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), according to media reports.

Burhan, who was designated a terrorist by the Indian government in 2022, was attacked by unknown gunmen in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, and reportedly shot multiple times.

The Pulwama Attack

On February 14, 2019, a suicide bombing in Pulwama killed 40 CRPF personnel in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack was carried out by 22-year-old Adil Ahmad Dar, a Jaish-e-Mohammed recruit, who rammed an explosive-laden SUV into a CRPF convoy.

The scale of the bombing shocked the country and triggered a major shift in India’s counter-terror strategy.

Balakot Airstrike Changed India’s Response Doctrine

Within days of the Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force carried out airstrikes on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot inside Pakistani territory.

The operation marked the first time since 1971 that Indian fighter jets crossed the Line of Control for a direct offensive strike, signalling a new doctrine of calibrated military retaliation against terror infrastructure.
