Rahul Gandhi holds PM Modi accountable for Gorakhpur tragedy

Bengaluru, Aug 17 (IBNS): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, holding him accountable for series of incidents which have plagued India in recent months.

The Gandhi scion was addressing a rally in Bengaluru, where he had earlier inaugurated a series of canteens named after his grandmother and India's first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Holding the Prime Minister responsible for the Gorakhpur tragedy, where at least 72 children died in the last seven days, including newborns, due to the alleged lack of oxygen, he said, "The PM did not tell you in his Independence Day speech that more than 90 children died in Gorakhpur due to his healthcare policies. The BJP believes that there are enough private hospitals for the rich and so they aren't bothered about government hospitals."

He also said that the BJP-led government paid less attention to healthcare budget, as a result, the hospitals had less funds to buy oxygen.

Gandhi also accused Prime Minister Modi of spreading hatred in the country.

In his jibe, he said that the Kashmir issue cannot be resolved by either bullets or abuses.

"Change can come by embracing all Kashmiris. We (UPA) worked hard over 10 years to bring peace to Kashmir, but it was all destroyed in a month by the Modi government," Gandhi said.

Gandhi also criticised the Prime Minister's attitude towards the Chinese President.

Speaking about the Doklam standoff, he said, "Some time ago, the Chinese president came to India. While our PM was busy playing host and embracing him, a thousand Chinese soldiers entered our territory. In his Independence Day speech, did anyone hear the PM say the Chinese forces are still sitting inside Bhutan."

The Congress vice-president also took a shot at the Prime Minister's 2014 general election campaign promises.

He said that while Modi promised two crores job, the rate of employment in India is the highest in present day.

"Modi promised two crore jobs yearly when he took over as PM. But the rate of unemployment today is highest in eight years. The BJP doesn't care about the poor, farmers and dalits, like the Congress does," Gandhi said.
