Rahul Gandhi set to become Congress President uncontested

| @indiablooms | Dec 04, 2017, at 05:05 pm

New Delhi, Dec 4 (IBNS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is all set to assume the party's topmost post without any contest, media reports said.

Rahul, who is filing his nomination to become the Congress chief, met senior party leaders at the headquarters on Monday.

Though the nomination process has started at 11 a.m., no one other than Rahul is likely to turn up to take part in the party election.

Present Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will be the proposers for Rahul's elevation.

While interacting with media, Singh said: "Rahul's (likely) elevation is another step by the Congress party to serve the nation."

"Rahul will carry forward the tradition of the Congress party" the former PM added.

Sonia, who took over the Congress helm in May 1998, is the longest serving president of  the party.

Rahul took over as Vice President, the number two position,  in January 2013.

The Congress will be heading towards the polls in the Gujarat Assembly election in December as it is aiming to oust the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
