Rahul Gandhi visits family of Punjab farmer who committed suicide

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 18 (IBNS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited the family of a farmer in Punjab who committed suicide last week.

His suicide comes barely a month after he met the Congress Vice President and briefed him on the distress caused by crop loss due to unseasonal rain.

Gandhi, who arrived at Daduwal village in the Fatehgarh Sahib district early on Thursday morning, was seen consoling the family members of 60-year-old Surjit Singh.

Singh killed himself by consuming poison after his wheat crop was destroyed by unseasonal rain.

He reportedly had a loan of Rs. seven lakh that he was unable to pay off due to mounting losses.

Gandhi is also likely to participate in 'bhog', a ritual performed after death, for the farmer.
