SC allows probe charges against ED officer, investigating into Aircel-Maxis case
New Delhi, Jun 27 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Government to probe the disproportionate assets charges against Enforcement Directorate officer Rajeshwar Singh, who was investigating the Aircel-Maxis and 2G Spectrum case, media reports said.
The bench headed by Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjay K Kaul quoted a government affidavit that it does not want to protect any of the guilty, no matter how high up in the system they might be.
Earlier in the day, the apex court said that because the allegations are serious and as the 2G case is a sensitive one, the ED officer probing it should not be under a cloud.
“You are simply an officer. You can't be given a blanket clean chit. Everybody is accountable,” the bench, comprising Justices Arun Misra and Sanjay K Kaul, told Rajeshwar Singh.
Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the Government was willing to investigate the allegations that Rajeshwar amassed disproportionate assets. He handed over a communication in a sealed cover to the bench.
On Tuesday, the top court heard a plea filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, also seeking to implead himself as a party in a petition which has sought a probe into alleged disproportionate assets of Rajeshwar Singh.
A fresh petition had been filed by one Rajneesh Kapur, stated to be an investigative journalist, alleging that Singh has amassed disproportionate assets beyond the known sources of his income.
“Hilarious in SC. The writ petitioner asking for removing ED investigator did not turn up,” Swamy had tweeted after the hearing on Tuesday. “Court asked me personally to inform the missing petitioner to be present tomorrow (June 27)”, Swamy had tweeted.
