SC refuses to stay appointment of Suhag as next Army Chief
New Delhi, July 7 (IBNS) The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the appointment of Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next Army Chief of the Indian Army.
The apex court had earlier agreed to hear a petition challenging the appointment of Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag as the new chief.
In his petition, senior Lieutenant General Ravi Dastane has alleged that Suhag's selection as the new Army chief was a case of "favouritism".
The apex court, however, on Monday said there was no reason to stay the appointment.
Brushing off all controversies, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on June 11 said Vice Chief of Indian Army Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag's appointment as the next Army Chief has been finalized.
"The appointment is final. The post of the Army Chief must be kept out of all controversies," said Jaitley.
The Lok Sabha on June 11 witnessed an uproar over an affidavit on Suhag in connection to his promotion as the next Army Chief.
The affidavit said the alleged lapses which were made as grounds to impose disciplinary ban on Suhag were "baseless", "premeditated", "vague" and "illegal".
Suhag is scheduled to take over as the Army Chief on August 1, reports said.
He will be the second officer from the Gorkha Rifles to become the Army chief, after the late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
