Second phase of Chhattisgarh polls records 72 pct voting
Raipur, Nov 20 (IBNS): The second and final phase of Chhattisgarh elections concluded on Tuesday evening and recorded 72 percent of voting till 6 pm, media reports said.
In the second phase, voting took place for 72 seats across 19 districts in the state.
Polling commenced at 8 am in the morning.
More than 1.5 crore people were eligible to cast their votes on Tuesday.
During the 18-seat first phase voting, 76.28 percent people had exercised their franchise.
More than one lakh personnel, helicopters and drones were used in the state to keep security tight during voting.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and urged people to exercise their franchise.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has been ruling the state for the past 15 years.
The Congress is eyeing on to wrest power in the state, which is presently ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Chief Minister Raman Singh.
Ajit Jogi, who ruled Chhattisgarh for the first three years as a Congress Chief Minister, later left his own outfit and aligned with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Communist Party of India.
The alliance is seen emerging as a formidable third front.
The state polls are crucial for both the incumbent BJP and Congress ahead of the 2019 General Elections, which will be held in few months' time.
