Security alert at Srinagar Airport: Two US nationals detained after satellite phone found in luggage
At least two US nationals were detained at Srinagar Airport on Sunday after security officials recovered a satellite phone — a prohibited item — from their luggage during a routine check.
Airport security personnel questioned the individuals before handing them over to local police for further investigation.
One of the detainees was identified as Jeoffery Scot. Officials told India Today that the satellite phone recovered from his baggage was manufactured by Garmin.
According to an advisory issued by the Consulate General of India, New York, carrying or using satellite phones in India without prior approval is illegal under Section 6 of the Indian Wireless Act and Section 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act.
“This is to bring to the attention of the general public that carrying or using satellite phones by foreign nationals — irrespective of passport category — without prior approval is illegal and unauthorised,” the advisory stated.
Foreign governments have also taken note of the restriction. The United States and the United Kingdom have warned their citizens that carrying satellite phones or certain GPS devices into India is strictly prohibited and could lead to detention, fines, or arrest.
