Seven dead as 11 coaches of Seemanchal Express derail in Bihar

Patna, Feb 3 (IBNS): At least seven people died and many got injured after 11 coaches of the superfast Seemanchal Express, which was on its way to Delhi, derailed in Bihar’s Vaishali district early on Sunday morning, media reports said.

The derailment occurred on Barauni- Bachhwara-Hajipur Single Line in Sonpur division of the East Central Railways near Sahadai Buzurg at around 3:52 am.

The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

Officials fear that the casualty toll is likely to go up.

The rescue operation is currently going on.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed sadness over the tragedy.

Rail Minister Piyush Goyal's Office tweeted: "Railway Minister is in touch with Railway Board members and GM ECR regarding #seemanchalexpress accident. Relief and rescue operations are underway. He has expressed profound grief over the loss of innocent lives in this tragic accident and wished speedy recovery for the injured."

The Ministry has also announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those deceased.

“Railways would give ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of every deceased. Rs 1 lakh would be given to the grievously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who suffered simple injuries. All medical expenses will also be borne by Railways,” Goyal's office tweeted.
