Shillong violence: Situation remains tensed, 500 people in Army shelter
Shillong, June 3 (IBNS): As curfew continued in parts of Meghalaya's capital city Shillong on Saturday, the Army was asked to be on standby after severe violence took place in the area following a clash between security forces and an irate mob on Thursday midnight.
The army cantonment has provided shelter to at least 500 people.
Fresh violence were reported from various parts on Saturday as well.
There were sporadic incidents of stone-throwing at some places in the city on Saturday too, media reports said.
Curfew, which was clamped in various places of the city on Friday, continued on Saturday.
The army conducted flag marches in disturbed areas and rescued several people.
Mobile internet and SMS services have been indefinitely suspended in Shillong in an attempt to stop spread of rumours in the area.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has appealed the people of Shillong to maintain peace.
He called up Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday night and assured him of safety of the Sikh community people and religious institutions in the state.
The clashes broke out between police and a mob after a bus conductor was allegedly assaulted by a group of residents on Thursday afternoon.
So far, eight people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
