Should I grant him bail? Court slams CBI lawyer for late arrival at Sanjoy Roy's hearing in RG Kar case

Kolkata/IBNS: A city court on Friday slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation lawyer for his late arrival at the hearing on civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy's bail plea in the case pertaining to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI lawyer was 40 minutes late in the hearing prompting the infuriated magistrate at the Sealdah court to say, "Should I grant him bail?"

The court also slammed the central probe agency for its "lethargic" attitude.

After Sanjoy's lawyer made the argument, additional chief judicial magistrate Pamela Gupta was told that the public prosecutor will be late in arriving.

The magistrate, who seemed furious, said as quoted by NDTV, "Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude on the part of the CBI. It is very unfortunate."

Sanjoy is the only person so far being arrested in the RG Kar rape-murder case that has sent shockwaves across the country and ignited public fury.

Though the RG Kar case is now being probed by the CBI, the state administration is facing public anger over its slow progress in the case until it was handed over to the premier investigating agency under the central government.

Despite Sanjoy's arrest in connection with the case, junior doctors, who are on a ceasework, as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case.

The CBI has arrested RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh in connection with the financial irregularities in the state-run hospital.

The CBI has ruled out gangrape in the RG Kar case and said that available evidence indicates only Sanjay Roy, arrested by the Kolkata Police, was involved in the crime, NDTV quoting sources reported on Friday.

Sources told the channel that the inquiry is in its "final stages" and that the agency will soon file its charges.

The CBI was handed over the case after the Calcutta High Court expressed dissatisfaction and pointed out several lapses in the investigation by the Kolkata Police.
