Gangtok/IBNS: A major accident occurred at the under-construction tunnel of NHPC's Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim's Namchi district.

Rescue operations have been severely hampered after the tunnel entrance collapsed and methane gas leaked inside the site.

According to official information, eight people have died so far, while several others are feared to remain trapped inside the tunnel.

The incident took place on Monday at the Edit-3 tunnel of the under-construction Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project located in the Samardung area of Jholung in Namchi district.

The collapse completely blocked the tunnel's entrance.

According to the administration, 27 people were inside the tunnel at the time of the accident, including 19 workers, two engineers, and six NHPC officials.
