Sonowal inaugurates 24th conference of DGsP, IGsP of NE

Guwahati, June 29 (IBNS): Stating that a concerted effort to fight terrorism and crimes in Northeast region is the need of the hour through a joint mechanism, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday said that in a region like Northeast India inhabited by diverse ethnic, linguistic and religious groups, it is the police forces which provide a sense of confidence to the people and allay their fears over security.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 24th conference of Director Generals of Police and Inspector Generals of Police and Heads of Central Police Organizations of the North Eastern region at Assam Administrative Staff College in the city, Sonowal remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given special emphasis to improve the security scenario in the North-East while making an all out effort to promote all round development in the region and the national level DGsP, IGsP conference held at Guwahati in 2014, first outside Delhi, indicated the Centre’s commitment to improve the security scenario of the region.



Stating that ‘sbka sath sabka vikash’ must be the guiding principle in building a unified approach in crime fighting among the security agencies of the NE region with better intelligence sharing among the states, Sonowal informed that Assam Government is initiating measures to build a smart police force as advocated by the Prime Minister for enabling efficient law and order management with the help of technology and meet modern day challenges.  

Saying that Prime Minister Modi terming ‘North East as the New Engine of growth for New India’ showed his confidence on the region to fuel the growth of the country in the coming years, Sonowal reiterated that a secure environment is the prerequisite to usher in rapid development and the police forces of the all the states in the region must play their role in ensuring a crime free society. He also appreciated the fact that security forces have been able to reduce crime and insurgency in the recent years in the state and the region. 

“Conferences like these help in creating better synergy between the police forces of all states and different security agencies which would help in formulating effective plan for security preparedness and modern technology must be utilized for better policing,"  said he.

Chief Secretary V.K.Pipresenia and Director General of Assam Police Mukesh Sahay, who also spoke on the occasion, advocated setting up of North East Police Force for better coordination in managing crime in the entire NE region by a single force and better security mechanism at inter-state borders for reducing crimes like arms and drugs trafficking, insurgent movements and they also underlined the role of police in disaster management.   

 

Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Additional Director of Intelligence Bureau P.S.Purohit were also present in the conference among others.
