Guwahati, May 22 (IBNS): Launching a pilot project of the Guwahati Traffic Police (GTP) on Monday at a function held at Judges’ Field in the city, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that a smart police force is of paramount importance to cope with modern day law and order challenges and modernisation of Guwahati Traffic Police has been initiated through this pilot project.

It is to be mentioned that two hundred newly inducted Traffic constables from different units of Assam Police have been trained as part of this pilot project and they are provided new uniform of navy blue trousers and sky blue shirts keeping in mind weather condition of the city.

These new police personnel would be engaged in various traffic management related activities and the number of traffic constables working as ‘friends of pedestrian’ will also be increased for the benefit of pedestrians as part of this initiative.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on building smart police forces in the country in the DGP’s and IG’s conference at Guwahati in 2014, Sonowal said that smart police would be a reality in the state and smart police force would be able to handle modern law and order challenges.

He urged upon all police officials of the state to be more humane in delivering their duty and become friends with the public in their times of need.

Saying that Guwahati is going to be the ‘gateway to South East Asia’ and not remain only Gateway to Northeast as the increased infrastructure developmental activities under Act East Policy of Prime Minster Narendra Modi would catapult the city to global centre-stage soon, Sonowal stated that in the changed scenario the city police, including traffic police, must gear up to guide the visitors to the city and help them explore Guwahati.

He also said that city inhabitants always wanted streamlining of the traffic on the road and this pilot project would bring much needed change.

Commenting that Assam Police has always been appreciated by public for their dedication and sincerity, Sonowal said that they must uphold their reputation by performing duties with honesty and enable all citizens to lead a life of dignity.
