South Delhi church vandalized, police begin probe

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IBNS) Unknown miscreants vandalized and allegedly desecrated a church in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj in the wee hours of Monday, with media reports putting it as the fifth such attack since December in the region.

Members of the St Alphonsa's Church said the miscreants jumped the wall and broke opened the main gate and ransacked the belongings of the church between 1 am and 3 am.

While police reached the spot and started investigating the matter  reportedly as a case of robbery first, the church officials said they are clueless what led to the attack and who were behind it. However, they felt it was a case of attack on their religion.

"It is a clear case of desecration," said a cleric of the church, adding that only those things which are sacred to them are vandalized and it is not just a case of robbery.

The St Alphonsa's church in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj was allegedly vandalised today. The fifth attack on a church since December comes just five days before elections in Delhi.

The Delhi Police has registered a case of robbery, but members of the church said unidentified people jumped in from the main gate wall, broke opened the main gate of the church at around 3 am and ransacked the sacristy cupboards and other property.

Delhi's Archbishop Anil JT Couto was quoted in media saying that the attacks are clearly in an orchestrated manner.

Police had earlier arrested three people in connection with a similar vandalisation of a church in west Delhi's Vikaspuri last month, claiming that they "don't have any connection" with any  political party or fringe groups.
