Kolkata, Jan 18 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 60th anniversary celebrations of Netaji Research Bureau and also unveiled the refurbished ‘Wanderer’ car in which Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose had escaped from house-arrest on 16-17, January, 1941, at Kolkata to reach Gomoh on 18th January, 1941 – an incident that triggered the series of historic and electrifying events related to the last phase of India’s freedom struggle.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s name is perhaps the most emotive issue to Indian political arena, particularly Bengalis even many years after the great man’s disappearance. Netaji continues to be the centre of many controversies till date, he added. Shri Mukherjee stated, he is acquainted with every nooks and corners of the historic building from where Netaji’s ‘Mahaniskraman’ (The Great Escape from house arrest in guise of Md. Ziauddin) took place.{image_1}

In a note of admiration for Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose, Netaji’s nephew and the founder of Netaji Research Bureau, who also happened to be his friend, the President stated, Dr. Bose is the only person who saw the great leader for the last time in the sub-continent and hence is a witness to the historic incident of Netaji’s great escape which led to a series of consequential events and also led to Dr. Bose’s imprisonment for three to four years at various places from Lahore to Kolkata. But Dr. Bose’s indomitable spirit propelled by his Rangakaka (uncle) that is Netaji’s request for a favour (to help him escape from house imprisonment) made him work for the country.{image_2}

The dignitaries present on the occasion included the Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathi, Chairperson of Netaji Research Bureau (NRB), Krishna Bose, Council members of NRB Prof. Sugata Bose and Prof. Sumantra Bose and many others.
