Supporting Swachh Bharat is not endorsement of BJP agenda: Tharoor

| | Oct 07, 2014, at 01:53 am
New Delhi, Oct 6 (IBNS): Congress leader Sashi Tharoor on Monday said accepting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to support his 'Swachh Bharat Mission' did not mean he was accepting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s 'core Hindutva agenda'.

In a series of tweet, Tharoor said: "Astonished by charges I'm proBJP. My 30-year paper trail of published writings=my idea of India&my profound belief in India's pluralism."

"Being receptive to specific statements or actions of BJP leaders does not remotely imply acceptance of the party's core Hindutva agenda," he said.

The Congress leader said: "Such comments ignore my extensive criticisms of BJP government, which are all a matter of record and which far outweigh positive points."

Tharoor made the remarks at a time when  Congress' Kerala leader MM Hassan  told media that the former Union Minister should stop praising Modi.

Tharoor on Thursday accepted Modi's invitation to join the 'Swachh Bharat Mission'.

He had tweeted: "Honoured to accept the invitation of PM @narendramodi to join Clean India campaign. Just landed in Bucharest &heard d news. Action on return."
