Supreme Court rules in favour of transgenders
The transgender should get voters ID, passport and driving licence and job reservations besides educational quotas.
"This is a big right for us," said well known transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi after the apex court judgement.
"A country's development is seen in the development of its minority. I feel proud as an Indian today," said Laxmi.
The Supreme Court admitted the discrimination and persecution faced by the transgenders in India and asked for remedial measures by the government to improve their social status and protect their rights.
The court said every human being has a right to choose a gender. The SC admitted the need to recognize the Third Sex.
The SC gave the judgement on a petition by the National Legal Services Authority.
The judgement was given by a bench of Justices KS Radhakrishnan and AK Sikri.
