Thambidurai to take over as next LS dy-Speaker

| | Aug 12, 2014, at 08:02 pm
New Delhi, Aug 12 (IBNS): AIADMK leader M Thambidurai will be the next deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha as a unanimous choice by both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition.

Thambidurai’s name was proposed by senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and seconded by Jyotiraditya Scindia.

It was learnt from sources the dy-Speaker’s candidature was proposed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu to the Congress and other opposition parties, media reports said.

The BJP’s nomination for Thambidurai was seen as a tactical move to earn more support in the 250-member Rajya Sabha where the newly-elected saffron brigade is a minority with only 46 members in the Upper House.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) needs at least 125 for smoothly pushing through key legislatures.

J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha.
